Report of the 13 th ISP PG Convention
The 13 th ISP Post Graduate convention was held in Mangalore between 7 th -9 th March. The conference brought together over 980 delegates from all over the country who were provided with a platform to present several new and innovative studies. The conference was thus, aptly named Peri-Innovate highlighting the quest for new innovations in the field of Periodontics as the main aim of this conference.
The conference began on 7 th march with the pre convention courses that were held at 3 separate locations. The first pre convention course was held at A.J. Shetty Institute of Dental Sciences by Dr. Kishore Bhat on periodontal microbiology-basic techniques and principles. A lecture and hands-on course was also conducted on microbial diagnostic procedures at the same venue. Hands on demonstration of PCR by Eppendorf India Pvt Ltd and Dr. Kishore Bhat, included Anaerobic bacteria culture methods and identification demonstration, phagocyte function test and rapid diagnostic tests in periodontal disease.
The topic of the second pre convention course was Interpreting Cone Beam CT Images for Oral Implantology. This also included Hands on Workshop. Cone Beam Computed Tomographic (CBCT) imaging is an integral part of diagnostics and implant imaging but seldom used, due to lack of sufficient knowledge& exposure. This workshop provided the participants with an understanding of the fundamentals of diagnostic 3D CBCT imaging including the various aspects of implant radiology, as well as clinical guidelines for the use of CBCT. The resource persons for this pre convention were Dr. Praveen Birur, Professor and Head Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology (K.L.E. Society Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalore) and Dr. Ravikiran Ongole, Professor Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology (Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Mangalore).
Another preconvention course was held in Yenepoya Dental College on Piezosurgery/Ultrasonic Bone Surgery: Simplifying bone Management in critical Scenarios. The speaker was Dr. Sudhindra Kulkarni Professor, Department of Periodontics, SDM College of Dental Sciences, Dharwad. The key points in the course included Need for bone manipulation, techniques for bone manipulation, and the science behind the technology of Piezo-surgery, Clinical Procedures and Case by case description of the use of Piezo-surgery. A video demonstation was also included.
The commencement of the conference on 8 th march was marked by the inaugural function. This was followed by a Listerine lecture on Bioaerosol contamination: A closer look for healthier working life given by Dr. Rajeev Chitguppi. The chairpersons for this session were Dr. A.R Pradeep and Dr. Dilip G pol. Simultaneously an extensive lecture on Alloplastic bone grafts was conducted by Dr. Arun Sadashivan moderated by Dr. Shamila Shetty. The next lecture was given by Dr. Chetan Hegde explaining the concept of Occlusion and the importance of understanding this topic for a well rounded periodontal treatment. Perio Esthetics is rapidly becoming a very important part of periodontal surgeries due to the growing awareness in the general population. Dr. Anil M took an in-depth lecture on perio esthetics that proved highly beneficial for all the delegates. The lecture was moderated by Col. Shrihari A. K.
This was followed by a stimulating point counter point session moderated by Dr. Ashish Jain. Various topics from Periomedicine including Pregnancy Outcomes, Diabetes Mellitus, CVS in relation to periodontitis etc were debated upon by 8 panelists. The audience was captivated by the knowledge and practical expertise of the panellists.
Another event that all the delegates looked forward to was the Quiz. Conducted effortlessly and with great ιlan by Dr. Ashita Uppoor it proved to be quite a highlight. On Day one the preliminary round was conducted wherein 31 teams from various dental colleges competed against each other. On the basis of a set of MCQ's 5 teams were selected to participate in the final round on Day Two.
The afternoon session for Day one Began at 1pm and went on till 5 in the evening. The scientific session provided a platform for all the young delegates to present papers and talk about several new studies conducted by them under the guidance of their respective staff. The afternoon was divided into 2 sessions and 500 papers were presented by the delegates over a span of 4 hours in 20 halls simultaneously.
Day two (9 th march) began with a guest lecture by Dr. Arunachalam Kumar titled Simplifying young minds. The lecture was chaired by Dr. Biju Thomas. Simultaneously another guest lecture was given by Dr. Mahalinga Bhat explaining the intricacies of Host modulation that was well appreciated by all the delegates. Dr. Arvind Shetty chaired this lecture and paved the way for the audience to interact with the guest speaker and clear their doubts on the topic.
Day two also brought along with it the much awaited final round of the quiz competition. 5 teams were selected to compete in the final round. The quizmaster was Dr. Ashita Uppoor. The atmostphere in the room can only be described as electrifying. After an extremely exciting round of quizzing and a volley of rapid questions the quiz ended with Bapuji Dental College emerging as the clear winner.
Scientific sessions were conducted from 11-3 pm on day two wherein the remaining paper presentations by the post graduates were completed. The conference ended on a high note with the valedictory function where all the prize winners were given their certificates and applauded for their efforts.
World Oral Health Day Celebrations - A Report
On the occasion of 'World Oral Health Day' i.e. on 20 th March 2014, the Department of Periodontology and Oral Implantology in Luxmi Bai Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital, Patiala celebrated World Oral Health Day by organizing free check-up and treatment camps, delivering lectures and distributing free samples to about 1800 patients and school children.
The institute under the chairmanship of Sh. B.D. Gupta, Managing Director Dr. Vineet Sharma, Dr. Ashutosh Nirola, Principal, and staff celebrated and organized this programme. About 1000 school children from nearby rural areas were covered in batches by organizing lectures on oral health. They were distributed World Oral Health Day badges and oral hygiene kits. Refreshments were also given to them. The importance of Oral Health and its maintenance was emphasized and the occasion was graced by International Boxer Mr. Mandeep Jangra, International Athlete Mr. O.P. Singh, and Mr. Shakti Singh who intermingled with children and spoke about health maintenance.
On this day, a camp was staged at the Satellite Rural Dental Clinic in the village Raipur Mandalan (Patiala) and its Government Elementary School along with an NGO "Jan Hit Samiti" where free check-up and treatment was provided to 430 patients and school children of the same and the nearby villages. The treatment included scaling and polishing, GIC dental restorations, extractions, temporary restorations etc. The patients were educated regarding their oral health with the help of posters, pamphlets, models, audio-visual aids and by motivational lectures on oral health. Samples in the form of Colgate and Sensodyne toothpastes, Proflo and Kidodent mouthwashes, and kids toothbrushes were also distributed among the poor patients and school children free of cost.
Modern Senior Secondary School, Patiala also participated in the World Oral Health Day celebrations organized by the institute. I myself patronized the programme. About 550 students were given badges and toothpastes. Students were emphasized on the importance of oral health and were guided on how to go about maintaining good dental health.
