Govt. Dental College Mumbai bags first prize in oral hygiene day celebration at national level

The Indian Society of Periodontology observes 1st August as oral hygiene day to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. G B Shankwalkar, the doyen of Periodontics in India. It is celebrated every year to bring awareness and also to stress importance in preventing oral diseases. Hygiene plays important role in preventing many oral diseases and conditions. Due to lack of awareness clubbed with poverty and illiteracy, the Indian population suffers from diseases that could have been prevented. Indian society of Periodontology provides an opportunity to spread the message of oral hygiene across the country to benefit the Indian community through the dental colleges and organizations.

Dental Colleges across the country have participated with lot of enthusiasm and also other professional dental organization have participated and have spread the message of oral hygiene to general public. Oral hygiene day celebration competition was organized in three categories. Results are as follow

Category I: Best Dental College

First Prize Govt. Dental College and Hospital, Mumbai

Second Prize Surabhi Dental College, Meerut

Third Prize Vinayaka Mission Dental College, Salem

Oral hygiene day is ideally celebrated on August 1 to mark the birthday of late Dr G B Shankwalkar the pioneer of Periodontology in India, but due to the sad demise of Dr Kalam on July 27, and observance of a 7-day mourning nationwide, this programme was postponed till August 3. The event began with the installation of his portrait in the student library followed by a grand inauguration hosted by Dr Akshaya Banodkar.

In the inaugural speech Dean Dr. Mansing Pawar said that this year, the oral hygiene day celebration in government dental college and hospital was a mega event organized as a tribute to Dr Kalam. Four videos of oral hygiene awareness were launched by the dean who mentioned in his address that this oral hygiene awareness should not be restricted to just one day but instead, should be a regular affair in one's day to day practice.

HOD Periodontics, Dr Rajesh Gaikwad addressed a gathering and stressed the importance of oral hygiene awareness in the society. To reach out to people from various strata of society, students and staff members participated in a rally towards CST station which was witnessed by hundreds of onlookers along the way. “Passionate shots of quit tobacco, smoking kills and healthy mouth, healthy body echoed through the streets,” said Dr. Gaikwad. Poster exhibition was organized outside CST station. The posters were prepared by students under the guidance of their teachers and it explained various oral diseases, their prevention and treatment measures to the public. 2000 pamphlets depicting the right way to maintain good oral hygiene were distributed among the people. The students also prepared a flash mob to grab more eyeballs which also showed people the right brushing technique and use of mouthwash. A professionally directed, highly entertaining yet educational street play was presented by students which stressed the ill effects of the use of tobacco, gutka, cigarette and related products.

Prize distribution ceremony was attended by Dr. Rajesh Gaikwad held at Hyderabad on occasion of 40TH ISP National Conference. Government Dental College and hospital Mumbai had won the 1st prize previously for the same in 2012, 2013 and special prize in 2014.

40th ISP “Ruby - Jubilee” National Conference was held from Oct 30 th - Nov 1st, 2015 at Novotel - Hyderabad International Convention Center, hosted by Sibar Institute of Dental Sciences, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh.


   Pre-Conference Courses Top

The highlight of the 40th ISP National Conference was the Interactive sessions by eminent International speakers which started at 9:00 AM on 30th

October 2015 in the presence of ISP President Dr. Biju Thomas, Secretary Dr. Balaji Manohar, Conference Secretary Dr. Santhosh Sreedhar,, Organizing Chairman Dr. Raja V. Murthy, Organizing Secretary Dr. Swarna Chakrapani, Pre conference Chairman Dr. Harinath Reddy. The first Interactive session by Dr. Kenneth S Kornman on “Genetics and Periodontitis”, facilitated by Dr. Dr. Jaya Kumar, Dr. Faizuddin and Dr.CD. Dwarakanath from 9:00 AM- 10:30 AM. The second interactive session was by Dr. Jorgen Slots on “What is Aggressive and Chronic Periodontitis- Exactly” from 11:00 AM- 12:30 PM. The third interactive session was by Dr. Georgios E. Romanos on “ New Advances in Bone Grafting Techniques: From Horizontal to Vertical Dimension in Implant Dentistry”, facilitated by Dr. Krishnanjaneya Reddy and Dr. Satyanarayana.D from 1:30 - 3:00 PM held at Novotel - HICC, which received an outstanding response from delegates. A total of 300 delegates participated in the interactive sessions. A Hands-on Pre-conference course on “Periodontal Microsurgery using Operating Microscope” was conducted at Panineeya Institute of Dental Sciences, Dilsukhnagar, Hyderabad by Dr.K.V. Arun, Professor, Department of Periodontics, Ragas Dental College.

   Executive Committee Meeting Top

EC Meeting of ISP was held from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm.

   Scientific Programmes Top

Scientific programme began with Poster presentations by post graduate students at 2:00 PM. Around 1200 students from all over the country participated enthusiastically in the poster presentations. The sessions were carried out for 2 days.

   Inaugural Function Top

The Grand Inaugural ceremony of the Conference was started at 4.30PM on 30th Oct, 2015. The Organizing Chairman Dr. Raja V Murthy delivered the welcome address. The Chief Guest and Guest of Honour were Dr. Dibyendu Mazumder, President, Dental Council of India and Dr.L. Krishna Prasad, Principal, Sibar Institute of Dental Sciences respectively. The meeting was presided over by ISP President Dr. Biju Thomas who delivered the Presidential Address. ISP secretary Dr. Balaji Manohar, ISP President elect, Dr. Praveen Kudva, Dr. Santhosh Sreedar, Dr. Srinivas addressed the gathering during the function. All the ISP Awards were presented during the inaugural function. Vote of thanks was proposed by Organizing Secretary Dr. Swarna Chakrapani. The Inauguration was continued with the felicitation of Life Time Achievement awards to Dr. B.R.R. Varma, Dr.S.A. Kale, Dr.R.P. Nayak, Dr. Lakhanpal, Dr.C.P. Boghani, Dr. Ingrid Dsliva, introduced for the first time.

   Oration Top

Inaugural function was followed by the Dr. (Mrs.) Ginwala Oration presented by Dr. Kenneth S Kornman on “Periodontitis interactions with systemic diseases”.

   Carnival Top

The Carnival was arranged in lawns of Novotel- HICC with delightful music and cuisine was delicious Hyderabadi dishes.


   Oration Top

The Dr. G B Shankwalkar Oration was presented by Dr. Jorgen Slots on “Periodontal Herpes viruses: Prevalence, Pathogenicity and systemic risk”.

   Scientific Programmes Top

The scientific sessions started with key-note lectures by National and International speakers. There were lectures by Dr. Georgios E. Romanos on “Management of crestal bone loss in implant dentistry”, “Control of biofilm” by Dr.R. Suresh and “Biomarkers” by Dr. Kenneth S Kornman.

Point- counter point session remained as the best part of the conference with the topic being “Immediate versus delayed placement of implants” which was moderated by Dr. Georgios E. Romanos. Panel members of Point-counterpoint session were Dr. Farhan Durrani, Dr. Nigam Buch, Dr. Girish Byakod, Dr. Viral Patel, Dr. Hormuzd K Vakil, Dr. Sharath Shetty.

Another attraction of the conference was a lecture by Dr. A.R. Pradeep and Dr. Ashish Nichani on “How to write a research article for publication”, and “ What can you expect from the editor ? You too can write….. My prescription to filling the blank page!” respectively., There were also wonderful informative lectures by Dr. Abhay P. Kolte, Dr. Neel Bhatavadekar, Dr. Gopala Krishnan, Dr. Ashokan. C, Dr. Nymphea Pandit, Dr. Anirudh.B. Acharya,, Dr. Sangeeta Dhir, Dr. Baiju.R.M, Dr. Anirban Chatterjee Dr.T.K. Pal, Dr. Jagadish pai, Dr. Harpreet Singh Grover, Dr. Vijay Deshmukh, Dr. Vishakha Grover, Dr.K.V. Arun, Dr. Siby T. Chennankara, Dr. Praveen kudva, Dr. Neeraj Deshpande, Dr. Mangesh B. Phadnaik, Dr. Varsha Shourie and Dr. Biju Thomas

   Annual General Body Meeting Top

AGM of the society was the held at the main podium of the Novotel. The meeting discussed all the agendas and took important decisions.

   Banquet : Hu-Friedy Night Top

Banquet was at N-Convention, Madhapur 10 mins drive from the Conference Venue, which started at 8:00 PM. Transport was provided to the delegates to reach the banquet venue. All the delegates thoroughly enjoyed the cultural programmes and delicious food.


   Scientific Programme Top

The hectic scientific schedule continued on the third day with key-note lectures by Dr. Purnima Kumar on “Diabetes, smoking and periodontal health”, “New and more effective Antimicrobial Periodontal therapy” by Dr. Jorgen Slots and “Laser Application in Periodontology and implant therapy” by Dr. Georgios E. Romanos.

Perio Quiz was a captivating event, conducted by Quiz Master Dr. R. Viswa Chandra which included a preliminary round of written test among which 6 teams were selected for the final round. Final round of the Quiz was very interesting, informative and the delegates thoroughly enjoyed the programme.

A record number of approximately 1800 delegates participated in the 40th ISP National Conference, Hyderabad and around 40 companies participated in the Trade exhibition. All the delegates registered befor 30th August were given PGF-6 Goldman fox probe as conference gift. The Organizers thanked the trade participants and the principal sponsor-Colgate, Gold Sponsor Listerine and Instrument partner Hu Friedy for their contribution towards 40th ISP National Conference.

   Valedictory Function Top

The accomplishment of the conference was fulfilled with a benevolent validectory function held on 1st Nov at 5:00 PM. The meeting was chaired by ISP President Dr. Biju Thomas. ISP Secretary Dr. Balaji Manohar honored all the COC members, and the vote of thanks was given by Organizing Secretary Dr. Swarna Chakrapani.
