The Indian Society of Periodontology has completed its 44 years of meaningful existence and is marching ahead in the right direction successfully. There have been a lot of changes which have occurred through these years and the current lot of members including many of the office bearers are a witness to it or at least are in the knowhow of it. The society has gained in strength and now we are a proud family of over 5000 members. The strength of the society is one of the indicators of the belief and confidence of the members in the society and fortunately this belief is continued irrespective of the people occupying key positions in the society. With the increase in numbers there is a commensurate increase in the challenges being faced by the society and its members and which needs to be addressed properly.
With changing times and increasing interests of the members in the working of the society there is an urgent need to streamline the constitution through desired amendments. The executive committee and the constitution committee members have been putting in a plenty of efforts in preparing draft of the amendments which once approved by the members in the AGM will come into existence. Though the exercise is a tedious one but I must appreciate the interest shown by the members in doing a proper homework and coming prepared for the deliberations. I am hopeful that the exercise will be completed in the near future.
The ISP Study Groups is another area which needs to be streamlined as there have been additional requests for the formation of such groups at a number of places. But unless and until the rules and regulations are framed for the same and now incorporated in the constitution, it will defy logic in creating newer ones. The exercise is not only limited to creation of the study groups but after formation they should function on a consistent basis and involving all the members present in the respective area. Many a time the initial enthusiasm dies down in a few months and the group becomes defunct with hardly any activities conducted under the banner. Also, with the stricter governmental norms each of the study group is required to have their own PAN details with submission of the accounts on a yearly basis.
Periodontal diseases and their prevalence statistics needs to be assessed in our country as we lack an authentic data with regard to periodontal diseases. Authentic data of such sorts is one of the considerations in policy decisions by the governmental agencies, international associations and the industries involved in oral and periodontal health care. Absence of such a vital data impedes the progress and activities undertaken in this direction. Generating awareness amongst the general population is also an important aspect which has been neglected and ignored by the governmental agencies. The society in the past few years has taken an initiative in this direction, but the active involvement of other agencies is a key to effectively accomplish the desired results.
Being such a populous country also demands that we should be the torch bearers in defining the disease features and classifications of the diseases. However, it is unfortunate that in this field too we have to follow the western countries which only account to fraction of the clinical material available with us. Research contribution to the science of Periodontology is another area in which we need to augment our efforts. In the recent times many of our members have contributed in this direction though it may be considered to be meniscal.
A small and positive individual initiative and effort in this direction will ensure an overall progress of the society and our views in times to come. Let us strive to make our society strong, vibrant and more assertive on the issues which confront our profession.
ISPecially Yours
