As you are all aware, the Indian Society of Periodontology released a joint statement with Research Society on the Study of Diabetes in India last year about a multipronged approach to the management of periodontal diseases. It gives me immense pleasure to share with you all that the reader views to this manuscript is way past 4500 in the Journal of Indian Society of Periodontology. We are now in the process of implementing further measures to make the general public aware of the correlation between diabetes and oral health. World Diabetes Day is observed on the 14th of November and there could not be any other appropriate day than 14th November to spread public awareness actions amongst general public about the impact of oral health on diabetes and the effect of periodontal disease on diabetic control. Dr Ashish Jain has taken the inventiveness to conduct the programme all over the country. Colgate has exceptionally agreed to support the events. Indian Society of Periodontology has conducted screening of all the patients visiting the Department of Periodontology in selected 30 colleges of the country on 13th, 15th and 16th of November, 2021. Their blood sugar level was checked and patient education material along with oral hygiene kits were given to them. The target was to touch base with about 100 patients in each college and we achieved more than the target. Each college was provided with a glucometer, sufficient number of strips, patient education leaflets, banners and oral hygiene kits.
Additionally, as I have proposed, we will be restarting the one day 'Colloquium series' on oral health and its importance with the general dentist and other clinician in 5 different cities of India namely Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Nagpur and Vijaywada as the first scientific event of the year. This will be conducted from December onwards. From the clinician's point of view as well from the academician's point of view, the next few events could well define how we emerge from the pandemic induced stupor that our fraternity was going through.
The second scientific event of the year of ISP will be professional enrichment programme (PEP) along with local IDA branches. It will be conducted in various cities of India like Bangalore, Mangalore, Sullia, Kolkata, Raipur to name a few in order to generate a public awareness about oral health among the clinician and general dentist. The third scientific event in the forthcoming months of the calendar year will witness the interdisciplinary seminars conducted by the Indian Society of Periodontology in unison with other associations like conservative, prosthodontics, orthodontics as we all are a legacy of oral health teachers and clinical service contributors. I eagerly look forward to the events which will unfold in the near future with the support of the champions of our society.
